Hearing Every Voice: Embracing Inclusion During Deaf Awareness Week

Deaf Awareness Week, running from 5–11 May, is an opportunity to recognise the experiences of the Deaf and hard of hearing community – and to ask ourselves a critical question: is our workplace truly inclusive?

At Ford Search Partners, we support accountancy firms and executive talent where communication is everything. But inclusion isn’t just about what’s said – it’s about what’s heard, seen, and understood.

Approximately 1 in 5 adults in the UK are affected by hearing loss. That means your clients, colleagues, or candidates may already be navigating barriers you can’t see.

This week, we’re inviting employers to think beyond lip service. Here’s how to take meaningful steps toward accessibility and inclusion:

1. Review your communications – Are your videos subtitled? Do meeting notes follow up verbal discussions? Can you offer BSL interpretation for events or training?
2. Ask, don’t assume – Everyone’s needs are different. Foster a culture where adjustments can be requested without hesitation or stigma.
3. Provide hearing-friendly environments – Minimise background noise, use clear signage, and ensure your tech supports assistive devices.
4. Train your team – A basic understanding of Deaf awareness can make a world of difference in how inclusive your workplace feels.
5. Champion diverse role models – Representation matters. Amplify stories of Deaf professionals and leaders within your industry.

Inclusion isn’t just a policy – it’s a practice. This Deaf Awareness Week, take a small step that creates a big impact. Because a truly great workplace listens to everyone – even when they don’t speak out loud.
